Lasker is a tiny farming community of 152 people in northeastern North Carolina, about 20 miles from the Virginia border. US Highway 158 runs right through town, connecting east to Murfreesboro and west to Roanoke Rapids. The area sits in rolling tobacco and soybean country typical of the inner coastal plain. Oddly enough, this rural crossroads was named after Emanuel Lasker, the German chess champion who dominated the game for nearly three decades.
