Las Animas is a small county seat in southeastern Colorado along US Highway 50, about three hours from Denver via Pueblo. The Arkansas River runs through this high plains farming community of 2,540 people. Highway 50 connects east to Lamar (20 miles) and west to Pueblo, while local agriculture depends on river irrigation. The town sits near Boggsville Historic Site, which preserves Colorado's first permanent settlement from 1862.
