Lakeland is a small south Georgia farming town of about 3,000 people in Lanier County. US Highway 129 runs right through the middle, connecting north to Macon and south toward Florida. Most visitors are passing through or heading to Moody Air Force Base about 15 miles away near Valdosta. The town still has one of Georgia's last manually operated railroad crossings where someone comes out to lower the gates by hand.
