Lake City sits along Lake Pepin, where the Mississippi River widens into one of its most scenic stretches in southeastern Minnesota. US Highway 61 runs right through town, connecting to Red Wing 25 miles north and the Twin Cities about 75 miles away via US-52. The 5,000-resident community serves as a popular stop on the Great River Road, with marinas and parks taking advantage of the wide river views. Lake City claims to be the birthplace of water skiing, first demonstrated here on Lake Pepin in 1922.
