La Pine is a small high desert town on Highway 97, about 30 miles south of Bend. It's the gateway to Newberry National Volcanic Monument and sits along the Deschutes River at 4,150 feet elevation. The main routes are Highway 97 north to Bend (30 minutes) or south toward Klamath Falls, plus State Route 31 west to Summer Lake. From Portland it's a three-hour drive via Bend. The town was named after a massive landmark ponderosa pine that guided early travelers.
