La Harpe is a small Kansas town of about 500 people along US Highway 54, roughly 20 miles west of Fort Scott. Most visitors arrive via US 54 from either direction, or take US 169 south from Kansas City and connect west on 54. The town sits in typical southeastern Kansas prairie country with a grain elevator that's visible for miles along the highway.
