La Center is a small Kentucky town of about 700 people near the Ohio River, where Kentucky meets Illinois and Missouri. Highway 62 runs through town, connecting east to Paducah (25 miles) and Interstate 24, or west into Illinois toward Cairo. Most traffic is local commuting or tourists heading to Kentucky Lake recreation areas. The town operates one of Kentucky's last working ferries, the Dorena-Hickman Ferry, crossing the Mississippi River to Missouri since the 1930s.
