The route crosses the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and runs down Pleasure Island through Carolina Beach. Long-distance visitors typically connect through Wilmington from I-40 or I-95, while locals often use Carolina Beach Road as an alternate route. The town sits between the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear River, ending at Fort Fisher where massive Civil War earthworks once guarded the river entrance as the Confederacy's last major port.
