Kress is a small farming town in the Texas Panhandle, about 45 miles northeast of Lubbock on US Highway 87. The 640-person community sits amid cotton fields and grain elevators on the flat plains. Most visitors arrive via US 87 from Lubbock (50 minutes) or Amarillo (75 miles north). Highway 86 provides east-west access to Tulia and Plainview. The town was named after S.H. Kress, the five-and-dime store magnate who owned land here during the early railroad era.
