Karnes City is a small oil country town about 50 miles southeast of San Antonio via US Highway 181. The county seat has grown with the Eagle Ford Shale boom, bringing truck traffic and industrial activity to the rolling prairie landscape. Most visitors take US 181 from San Antonio or connect from Houston via US 59. The red sandstone courthouse from 1894 dominates the town square with its distinctive architecture.
