Karnak is a small river town in southern Illinois, 15 miles from where the Ohio and Mississippi rivers meet. Take Route 37 south from I-57 or north from Cairo to reach this community of 466 people. The town sits in typical river bottom country with flat farmland and experiences the humid summers and mild winters common to the Ohio Valley. Named after the Egyptian temple complex when the railroad came through in the 1850s.
