Kaltag is a remote Athabascan village of 68 people on the Yukon River, about 300 miles west of Fairbanks. No roads reach the community - access is only by small plane to Kaltag Airport, boat in summer, or snowmachine in winter. The village serves as an Iditarod checkpoint and maintains Alaska's post office established in 1900.
