Johnstown sits in a mountain valley where three rivers meet in southwestern Pennsylvania. US Route 219 runs north-south through town, connecting to I-80 about 45 miles north, while US Route 22 heads west to Pittsburgh (70 miles) and east toward Altoona. The mountainous terrain creates winding valley roads with steep grades. John Murtha Johnstown Cambria County Airport is 5 miles northeast of downtown. The city's Flood Museum commemorates the 1889 disaster when a dam failure sent a 40-mph wall of water through the valley, killing over 2,200 people.
