Johnston City is a small Illinois town of 3,300 people, about two hours southeast of St. Louis via I-57 and Route 37. It's a 15-minute drive south to Marion for shopping and services, or you can head north toward Mount Vernon on the same routes. The town started as a coal mining community, and you can still see the old company store building on West Ninth Street.
