John Day is a small high desert town in eastern Oregon that serves as Grant County's seat. Located along US Highway 26, it's about 250 miles east of Portland through mountain passes and high desert country. The area is known for ranching and logging, with the nearby John Day Fossil Beds National Monument containing some of the world's most complete fossil records spanning 40 million years.
