Joaquin is a small East Texas town of about 900 people nestled in pine-covered hills along State Highway 84. The highway connects it to Timpson 12 miles west and runs toward Louisiana to the east. For longer trips, drivers head south 45 miles to Interstate 20 near Marshall for access to Dallas-Fort Worth or Shreveport. The town was named after poet Joaquin Miller, who ironically never set foot in the East Texas community that honors him.
