Jerome perches on a mountainside 5,200 feet up, accessible via the winding State Route 89A with its dramatic switchbacks. From Phoenix, take I-17 north to Cordes Junction, then SR 69 through Prescott Valley to SR 89A. The Flagstaff route follows SR 89A south through Sedona's red rocks. This former mining town of 231 residents is now an artist community with narrow, steep streets and limited parking. The old Sliding Jail moved 225 feet downhill and remains where it stopped.
