Jefferson is a small farming town in southeastern South Dakota, home to 554 people along the Big Sioux River valley. Take Highway 12 west from I-29 near North Sioux City, about 15 miles. It's 45 miles south of Sioux Falls via I-29. The surrounding area features rolling prairie farmland growing corn and soybeans. The town's 1923 grain elevator still operates and towers over the landscape as a prairie landmark.
