Jal is a small oil town of 2,400 people in southeastern New Mexico's corner, just three miles from Texas. US Highway 18 runs north-south through town, connecting to Hobbs 25 miles north and continuing into Texas. The nearest major city is Lubbock, about 80 miles southeast via state highways. The town sits in classic Permian Basin country with oil derricks dotting the high desert landscape. A vintage Phillips 66 station on Main Street still displays original 1950s signage.
