Jackson is a Sierra Nevada foothills town reached via Highway 88, which connects Lake Tahoe to the Central Valley through gold rush country. Most visitors drive from Sacramento (90 minutes) or the Bay Area via Highway 580 to Highway 205 to Highway 99. The town sits at 1,200 feet elevation among oak-covered hills with a Mediterranean climate. The massive Kennedy Mine headframe still towers over downtown as a reminder of Jackson's deep-shaft gold mining past.
