Irene is a small farming town in southeastern South Dakota, sitting along State Highway 18 in Turner County. Most visitors drive west from Sioux Falls via I-90 and Highway 19, about a 45-minute trip through classic Great Plains farmland. The town reflects the area's strong Norwegian heritage, having been named after Irene Hanson, daughter of an early Scandinavian settler.
