Iraan is a small oil town in West Texas, about 50 miles southwest of Midland via US Highway 349. The community sits in classic Permian Basin country with rolling desert terrain and mesquite-dotted hills. Most traffic comes from oil field workers and ranchers traveling between scattered communities on US 349 and State Highway 163. The town was named after Ira and Ann Yates, whose ranch became the site of the massive 1926 Yates Oil Field discovery.
