Ionia is a small city in west-central Michigan, about 30 miles east of Grand Rapids via M-21. It's the county seat and sits where M-21 and M-66 intersect along the Grand River. Most visitors arrive from Grand Rapids on M-21 or from Lansing heading west. The city is known for the historic Michigan Reformatory, a state prison with distinctive brick walls that's been operating since 1877.
