Ione is a tiny logging town of 409 people tucked into the forested hills about 60 miles north of Spokane. Take US 2 east to Newport, then Highway 20 north through the scenic Pend Oreille River valley. Most visitors are heading to nearby recreation areas or forest service roads. The town's 1902 one-room schoolhouse still stands as a reminder of its logging camp roots.
