Independence, a small Louisiana city of 2,200, sits about 60 miles northeast of New Orleans via Highway 51 and Interstate 12. The town serves as Tangipahoa Parish's seat and lies in pine forest country distinct from Louisiana's famous swamplands. Most visitors arrive from I-12 through Hammond, then take Highway 51 north. The city hosts one of Louisiana's largest parish fairs each October at the Tangipahoa Parish Fairgrounds.
