Ihlen is a tiny farming town of 90 people in southwestern Minnesota, just 8 miles west of Pipestone on Highway 23. It's about 200 miles from Minneapolis via I-35 south to Highway 60 west. The town sits in classic prairie country near the South Dakota border, surrounded by corn and soybean fields. Its working grain elevator from the early 1900s remains a prominent landmark across the flat landscape.
