Idabel sits in southeastern Oklahoma's pine country, 15 miles from Arkansas in McCurtain County. US Highway 70 runs east-west through downtown, connecting to Broken Bow and continuing into Arkansas. US 259 provides the north-south route to Valliant and Texas. Long-distance visitors typically approach via Interstate 30 through Arkansas or US 271 from Interstate 40. The Museum of the Red River houses one of the region's finest Native American artifact collections.
