Hughes is a tiny Native Alaskan village of 40 people along the Koyukuk River, 270 miles northwest of Fairbanks. There are no roads to Hughes - visitors fly into Hughes Airport or use seasonal ice roads in winter. The village operates a traditional fish wheel on the river that catches salmon during their runs.
