Howe is a small town of 791 people in southeastern Oklahoma's Le Flore County, positioned along the Arkansas River valley where the plains meet the Ouachita foothills. Highway 59 runs north-south through town, connecting to Poteau 15 miles south and Sallisaw to the north, while Highway 9 provides the main east-west route. Most long-distance travelers use Highway 59 south to reach Interstate 40 for connections to Fort Smith or Oklahoma City. The town was named after Robert Howe, who opened the area's first general store when the railroad arrived in the early 1900s.
