Howard City is a farming community of 1,600 people in central Michigan, about 35 minutes northeast of Grand Rapids via US-131. M-46 runs right through town, connecting east to Mount Pleasant and west to the Lake Michigan shore. The restored 1920s movie theater downtown still operates on weekends with its original hand-painted exterior murals intact.
