Holyoke sits along the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts, about 90 miles west of Boston via I-90 and I-91. The city is easily reached from Springfield (25 miles south) and other Pioneer Valley communities via Interstate 91, which runs directly through town. Route 5 parallels the interstate for local travel, while Route 202 provides east-west connections. The downtown area features an intricate 19th-century canal system that once powered the city's paper mills and still carries Connecticut River water through the urban core today.
