Hobart is a Lake County suburb about 40 miles southeast of Chicago, connected by I-65 on its eastern edge and US Route 30 running east-west. Most residents commute north via local roads to I-80/94 for Chicago access, while regional trips use US 30 to Crown Point or Merrillville. The city centers around Lake George, a 27-acre glacial lake with a walking path right downtown.
