Highland Beach is a tiny waterfront community on the Chesapeake Bay, about 45 minutes from DC via Route 50 and Route 2 south. This historic town of 100 residents was founded in 1893 by Charles Douglass as one of America's first African American beach resorts after his family faced discrimination elsewhere.
