High Shoals is a small Gaston County community of 534 people, about 25 miles west of Charlotte via I-85 and local roads to Highway 321. The town sits along US-321, which runs north-south connecting Gastonia and Hickory. Highway 274 provides east-west access through the rolling Piedmont countryside. The community gets its name from the rocky shoals that early settlers used to power their mills along the South Fork Catawba River.
