Hidalgo is a tiny farming town of 60 people in southeastern Illinois, reached via Route 33 through Jasper County. The main access is from Newton to the west or from I-70 to the south. It's surrounded by agricultural fields with a continental climate. The grain elevator along Route 33 serves as the town's most recognizable landmark.
