Herndon is a farming town in northwest Kansas, 15 miles from Nebraska on US Highway 36. The main route connects Norton to the east with St. Francis to the west, serving long-distance travelers crossing the Great Plains. From county seat Atwood, it's 20 miles west on US 36. The town sits amid rolling wheat fields and cattle ranches under the wide Kansas sky. The post office has operated from the same small Main Street building since 1888.
