Herlong is a tiny railroad town in California's high desert, about 30 miles northwest of Susanville on Highway 395. Located in Lassen County's Honey Lake Valley at 4,000 feet elevation, it serves as a waypoint between Reno (45 miles south) and Oregon. Most visitors arrive via Highway 395 from Interstate 80 or connect from Highway 36. The Union Pacific mainline runs right through the center of town, with freight trains passing through day and night.
