Hempstead is a small Texas city about 50 miles northwest of Houston along US Highway 290, the main route between Houston and Austin. Highway 6 provides north-south access through the area. The city sits in rolling countryside with hot summers and mild winters. Hempstead hosts Texas's oldest continuously running county fair, the Waller County Fair and Rodeo, which has operated since 1856.
