Heavener is a small mountain town in southeastern Oklahoma near the Arkansas border, surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest. US Highway 59 runs right through town, connecting to US 271 for longer trips to Fort Smith or McAlester. The area's rolling hills and dense forests make it popular with outdoor enthusiasts. The town's main attraction is the Heavener Runestone, a sandstone slab with runic carvings that some claim were made by ancient Viking explorers.
