Hawarden sits in northwest Iowa's farm country, 15 miles from South Dakota along the Big Sioux River valley. Highway 10 runs east-west through town, connecting to Sioux Center and continuing toward Sioux Falls. Highway 182 provides north-south access, while US 75 offers regional connections about 12 miles east. The town of 2,600 serves surrounding agricultural areas with grain elevators and farm services. Its 1904 Carnegie Library remains one of only 101 such libraries built in Iowa.
