Harrisburg anchors southern Illinois coal country about 100 miles from St. Louis via Interstate 64. The city sits at the junction of US Routes 45 and 13, with I-64 providing the main corridor for out-of-town visitors. Most travelers take Exit 54 off I-64 to reach downtown via Route 145. The surrounding area features rolling hills and former mining communities, with the Shawnee National Forest nearby. Harrisburg-Raleigh Airport, just east of town, remains one of Illinois' few municipal airports still offering scheduled passenger flights.
