Harlan is tucked into a narrow Kentucky valley surrounded by steep Appalachian mountains. US Highway 421 is the main route in, connecting north to the Mountain Parkway system and south toward Virginia. The winding mountain roads can be tricky in winter weather. The courthouse square displays a bronze coal miner statue honoring the area's mining history and famous labor battles.
