Hamel is a small Illinois town of about 1,100 people located 30 miles northeast of St. Louis along Route 140. Take I-270 north from St. Louis and exit at Route 140 west to reach the village. It sits in the historic American Bottom region where the Mississippi River created fertile farmland that once supported major Native American settlements.
