Halstead is a small Kansas town of 2,500 people located 25 miles north of Wichita on US Highway 50. Take I-135 north from Wichita to Newton, then US-50 west for 8 miles. The town sits on flat prairie with a classic Great Plains grid road system. Newton City-County Airport is about 10 miles east. Halstead still operates one of the state's few municipally-owned grain elevators, a massive concrete landmark visible for miles.
