Hallettsville, the Lavaca County seat, sits 90 miles southeast of Austin on US Highway 77. This prairie town of 2,800 connects to major cities via Highway 77 north to Austin or south to Victoria, with State Highway 95 running east-west through town. Most visitors arrive from Houston via US 59 to Highway 95, or from San Antonio via US 183 to Highway 77. The 1897 courthouse with its working clock tower dominates the town square.
