Gypsum sits along US Highway 6 in the Eagle River Valley, about 45 miles west of Vail. Most visitors arrive via I-70 to Exit 140, then connect to US 6 through town. It's a regional hub linking Eagle (12 miles east) with routes north to Steamboat Springs via Highway 131. Eagle County Regional Airport is just 8 miles away. The town got its name from white gypsum deposits in nearby cliffs that were once mined for plaster.
