Gunnison is a high-altitude college town in central Colorado's mountain valley, sitting at 7,703 feet elevation. US Highway 50 runs directly through town, connecting east to Monarch Pass and west toward Montrose. State Highway 135 heads north 28 miles to Crested Butte ski area. The regional airport offers seasonal flights and sits just outside town. Despite summer highs in the 70s, Gunnison regularly records some of the coldest temperatures in the lower 48 states.
