Guide Rock is a farming town of 286 people in south-central Nebraska, positioned along Highway 136 about 15 miles west of Red Cloud. The Republican River valley location made it a natural stopping point for early travelers crossing the plains. Most visitors arrive via Highway 136 or connect from Highway 14 to the north through rural Webster County roads. The town takes its name from a 40-foot sandstone outcropping that still stands as a visible landmark along the highway, the same rock formation that guided wagon trains along the Republican River route in the 1800s.
