Groton is a farming town of about 1,700 people in northeastern South Dakota, 40 miles northwest of Aberdeen via US Highway 12. The town sits where Highway 37 crosses US 12, making it a natural stopping point between Aberdeen and the Missouri River communities. Most visitors use US 12 from Aberdeen, while locals make regular trips on the same route for shopping and services. The town's 1904 Carnegie library is one of the few original Carnegie buildings still operating in South Dakota.
