Gretna is a small Virginia town of about 1,450 people located on US Route 29, roughly 20 miles south of Lynchburg. The town sits in Pittsylvania County's rolling hills where Gretna Creek meets the Dan River. US 29 connects north to Lynchburg and Charlottesville, while Route 40 runs east-west through town. An old railroad bridge over the Dan River marks where trains once hauled timber and tobacco from the area.
